Founded in 2009 by BAFTA and MOBO award-winning UK hip hop artist Akala, The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company (‘THSC’) is a music theatre production company aimed at exploring the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern day hip-hop artists.Launched with the support of British actor Sir Ian Mc Kellen, we deliver bespoke education/social entrepreneurship development programmes offering young people a different view of the arts and ultimately, themselves.
In 2009, we received a London 2012 Olympic ‘Inspire Mark’, which coincided with our first ever ‘Hip Hop Shakespeare Live’ shows, now renowned for attracting diverse audiences spanning all ages and cultural background with performances broadcast on the BBC, Sky Arts, MTV, CBBC and international terrestrial TV channels.Due to popular demand, we have since established an Artist Associate and Peer Leader Academy programme to enhance our legacy of work with young people developed through our Education programme whom train to become part of our growing collective of freelance artistic talent.Peer Leaders include young artists (actors rappers/singers/poets) and creatives (producers/production crew/designers) from around the world.Artist Associates are a collective of established international artist’s who mentor and perform alongside Peer Leaders in our productions around the globe We produce interactive live music events, to showcase the work of up and coming talent who have come through our education programme who share the stage with established artists and actors. These events are produced as part of our “Hip Hop Shakespeare Live” brand in which we work closely with THSC Artist Associates and Peer Leaders to produce live performances at music, theatre, arts and literature festivals internationally. We also produce live events under our “Hip Hop Shakespeare Youth Live” brand in order to programme THSC performances at community events/festivals for our arts education residency projects.
